Student Member for Humanities Programme Committees

Published on 2 September 2024 at 13:19

The Faculty of Humanities is looking for student members for the programme committees in the
academic year 2024-2025.

Your function
Each VU study programme has its own programme committee (a participation body). Students and teachers are responsible within the programme committee for offering advice on improving and
maintaining the quality of education.
Members meet on a variety of issues related to improving and maintaining the quality of the study programme. They give written advice and suggest adjustments. Approval or advice may relate, for
example, to the Teaching and Examination Regulations (TER), educational evaluations and the use of ICT in the programme, or to the content of examinations. A TER is established annually for each
programme at faculty and programme level. The TER is an important document that states, for example, the conditions you must fulfil to obtain your degree and the assessment criteria. You can also find out in the TER how the content of your programme is fleshed out to achieve the educational objectives.

Your duties
• meet on a variety of issues related to improving and maintaining the quality of the study programme. It is recommended to meet once a month/per six weeks;
• issue (un)solicited advice (in writing) on matters and put forward proposals that relate to improving and maintaining the quality of the study programme. The programme committee is requested to give its advice or consent in good time before a decision is taken;
• creating an annual planning that states which activities are undertaken in which period. Also create a meeting schedule stating when and what meetings are held;
• participating in training on the position of the programme committee and its working methods, the TER and preparing the annual report;
• discuss the focus, spearheads and action points using the programme annual report and last year's annual report of the programme committee;
• help recruit new student members at the end of the academic year;
• prepare the annual report of the programme committee;
• reflecting on how the programme committee has functioned.

Your profile
• you are a bachelor or master student studying within the Faculty of Humanities (students from any discipline and year are welcome to apply!);
• you experience at first hand on a daily basis where education is going well and where there is room for improvement;
• you are interested in discussing the quality of education within your study programme and the content of your study programme;
• you would like to contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of education;
• you like to know the organisation behind your study programme;
• you have an affinity for offering (un)solicited advice on all kinds of issues related to improving and maintaining the quality of your study programme.

What do we offer?
An interesting role within the programme committee of your study programme. The compensation is 600,00 euros. You have a term of office of one year. The term of office can be subsequently renewed
twice. Extending the term of office is desirable.
What else do we offer:
• training courses, workshops and other facilities to develop yourself;
• opportunities to further professionalise your training committee;
• space to further develop your competences;
• a look behind the scenes: what is the organisation behind your study programme?;
• your valuable experience on the programme committee looks good on your cv!

About the participation bodies within the faculty
The education committee is a participation body. There are several participation bodies that are involved at different levels in, among other things, maintaining and improving the quality of education. VU Amsterdam has a system of shared participation, with the central bodies being the staff council, the university student council and the joint assembly. The faculty student council is the highest participation body, at faculty level, for VU students within their faculty. The programme committee is involved in ensuring and improving educational quality at the programme level.
